Soak Up the Sun at the Hotel Del Coronado

Where You Stay is Just as Important as Where You Eat

San Diego is blessed with 12,700 hotels, to choose from, but if they don’t have an ocean or bay view or are not in a coastal community or have some other overriding amenity such as a golf course to look at, don’t stay in a random place unless you can’t afford to stay anywhere else. If you’ve come all this way to San Diego to experience paradise on earth, then staying where you get an ocean or bay view  or in a coastal community with names like Shelter Island, Harbor Island, La Jolla, Del Mar, and Carlsbad, which all reside on the bay or ocean.  For sure get your bearings by looking at the San Diego County Map.

If all else fails stay a night in centrally located Mission Valley. Then with a good lay of the land move to somewhere in the coastal zone like Shelter Island, Mission Bay, Pacific Beach or La Jolla. Booking a night in centrally located Mission Valley is a smart move. Remember, it was the where to stay hub of San Diego before the downtown convention center was built. So, it has all the amenities necessary. Read the Mission Valley chapter.

My staff and I personally reviewed over 30,000 hotels in San Diego County and another 5,000 rooms in MEXICO. We inspected at least two rooms at each hotel, visited the housekeeping department and the front desk. Then we reviewed the amenities including swimming pools, saunas, on property restaurants before recommending them. This is your assurance that you will get a good room.

How to get the best room: always inspect the room before agreeing to stay there. Usually, the first room you look at will be okay, but why settle for just any room when you can get a superior room for the same price with a view just by inspecting the room or rooms before agreeing to stay there.

RECOMMENDED HOTELS BY LOCATION

Be sure to read each HOT LINKED suburb or city to get the lay-of-the-land, which most are  in a region with an ocean or bay view before you book a room.

North County Coastal: CARLSBAD

Beautiful Carlsbad is 34.4 miles from downtown San Diego, and if you are a multi-time visitor to the many attractions in the downtown area of downtown, you may opt to stay in Carlsbad  and discover the many amenities, which has made it a great place to live, eat and play. For great places to stay, you won’t be disappointed with the fine selections available throughout Carlsbad. In fact, LEGOLAND® even has accommodations for adults and kids with an emphasis on the word “Kids”. It’s kid-friendly! Highly recommended is the Tamarack Beach Resort (19) at 3200 Carlsbad Blvd. (760-729-3500) or (800-334-2199), which genuinely captures the charm of Carlsbad. This resort with its Mediterranean-style architecture and decor has 54 full-service one- and two-bedroom vacation rentals and 23 luxury hotel rooms overlooking the beautiful Pacific ocean. It’s housed in the same building as Dini’s Bistro by the Sea.

San Diego Central: CORONADO

Since 1886, a stay at the one and only resort hotel in America is to enjoy a stay at the all inclusive Hotel Del Coronado. If you come to San Diego via air, they’ll even pick you up by limosine. So if you want the best ocean view experience on America’s #1 voted Best Beach, plan your stay at the Hotel Del Coronado. Fine dining and even a skating rink is installed in the winter. Also plan to tour Coronado. Perhaps play golf at the nearby course and be sure to dine at the Blue Water Grill, across the street from the Hotel Del. You won’t be disappointed.

The Beach Club has a slew of amenities including being literally on the shore and home to the world famous tennis club, with a tiny golf course and two restaurants. One of which is the world famous Marine Room Restaurant, which is where the waves literally smash up on the glass at high tide (see restaurants). Even if you don’t stay here, you should definitely dine here at the waters edge on their patio, during the week, if possible. The setting is casual and the view of the ocean and surroundings are spectacular. They also offer underground parking and thus are the perfect hub from which to see all of the shores on foot and La Jolla and San Diego by car.

National City Boasts Excellent Restaurants

Cafe La Maze a National City Dining FavoriteSan Diego BEST Curbside Takeaways & Delivery Restaurants offer Gourmet Meals at Home
Cafe La Maze is a favorite National City Restaurant dating back to the 1940’s.

National City, which on San Diego’s bayfront is north of Chula Vista and south of downtown San Diego. It’s also the central industrial business hub of San Diego proper. It boasts more than 3,000 businesses in a tiny land area of only 7.3 square miles. Major employers include its huge marine terminal that processed 270,000 cars last year.

National City South Bay map

National City is the south bay home to the Mile of Cars. Buying a car in San Diego means definitely making a visit to the National City Mile of Cars. It is home to the county’s largest new and used auto sales center, The National City Mile of Cars (19) has an incredible inventory of more than 5,000 cars.

National City is also rich in turn-of-the-century Victorian homes. In fact, there are more Victorian homes in National City than anywhere else in California. The most promenent historical structure is a block long row of apartments aptly called Brick Row on Heritage Square (2) at 909 A Ave. (see map). Also visit [nationalcityca.gov] for a list of 25 historic homes complete with fascinating photos and address so that you can identify these structures as you pass by.

One of the most recommended dining destinations in National City is Villa Manila Restaurant (1) at 500 E. Eighth St. (619-477-8512). It’s located in the Old Schoolhouse Square, which is very near Brick Row historic buildings on A Avenue. There is a large concentration of Filipinos living in San Diego, and this restaurant comes highly recommended. While in National City be sure to dine here.

Another highly-touted restaurant dating back to the 1940’s and still as popular as ever is Cafe La Maze (4) at 1441 Highland Ave. (619-474-3222). Back in the 1940’s it was a popular destination for the movie star crowd including Clark Gable, Jane Russel, Errol Flynn, Bing Crosby, Joan Crawford Jean Harlow, Carole Lombard and others, and fittingly their photographs adorn the walls. The big attraction back in that era was that is was where the movie stars would stop off before or after a day at the Tijuana Race track. Then and now the decore oozes with class with its rich red leather booths, attentive service and cool sounding live entertainment performed while you dine. While it has the theme of a 1940’s restaurant and night spot it is as contemporary now as was then. This is one of the top 100 restaurants recommended by the SAN DIEGAN. See Restaurants

Rancho Santa Fe is Home to the Rich & Famous

Rancho Santa Fe, which is home to the rich and famous, is an inland community east of Solana Beach. Yet, it rivals the beauty of the coast. Tucked away in the hills only seven miles from the ocean, this plush yet tranquil village is a perfect setting for the more relaxed side of the lifestyle of the rich and famous. (See Map below).

Among the few thousand residents are such celebrities as professional golfer Phil Mickelson, singer Janet Jackson, Billionaire Bill Gates, and even a movie star or two. These are but a few of the many notable people, who enjoy the privacy anonymity of this extraordinary community not far from Del Mar and Solana Beach.

Rancho Santa Fe is a wonderful discovery for a day trip or a weekend getaway. The Ranch, as it is known by the locals, is home to an enchanting 3 square block little shopping district where you’ll find a host of delightful little shops to meander through and romantic gourmet restaurants to discover.

As can be attested by the noteworthy people who call Rancho Santa Fe home, it’s also a great place to live. The Rancho Santa Fe covenant area, with its specific architectural guidelines, covers approximately 6,200 acres and contains about 1,700 households. These mini estates are priced well into the millions of dollars. For more information about relocating to Rancho Santa Fe please contact the Rancho Santa Fe Association at (858-756-1174).

Rancho Santa Fe’s history dates back to 1845 when Juan Maria Osuna was granted San Dieguito Rancho by California’s last Mexican governor, Pio Pico. History buffs already know that Osuna was a colorful early settler and became the alcalde (mayor) of the Pueblo de San Diego and raised cattle here on his 8,824 -acre rancho, which is now Rancho Santa Fe.

HOW TO GET THERE

The drive to Rancho Santa Fe is in itself a pleasure trip. The easiest way to get there is to exit off of Interstate 5 at the Loma Santa Fe exit and head east. Loma Santa Fe feeds into Linea del Cielo. Within minutes you will notice that the road begins to meander, forcing you to slow down and enjoy the scenery. Locals will tell you that the roads were. intentionally engineered for this very purpose, so take your time and enjoy the scenery and the scent of citrus and eucalyptus groves.

The abundant eucalyptus trees that contribute so much to the charm of Rancho Santa Fe came to be here through an error in business judgment. Early in the past century, the Santa Fe Railroad was in constant need of wood for its railroad ties, and because eucalyptus trees tend t grow so tall and straight it was believed that they’d be an excellent source of wood. So, 300,000 trees were planted throughout what is now Rancho Santa Fe. Alas, it was discovered that the eucalyptus wood was too soft to hold railroad spikes. It was unfortunate for the railroad, but wonderful tranquility for Rancho Santa Fe.

WHERE TO DINE

One of the enjoyable things to do here is to join the local tradition of lunch or Sunday brunch outdoors on the patio at any of the fine restaurants in the ranch. Fine dining, both indoors and outside on the patio is the specialty at the world-famous Inn at Rancho Santa Fe (858-756-1131). Continental cuisine is served for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. As you enter the Ranch. you’ll undoubtedly notice the spacious one-story hotel on your right.

Another excellent recommendation is Mille Fleurs Restaurant (858-756-3085), which means a thousand flowers in French. Its name is very appropriate for being the Gourmet magazine winner for being one of the top 25 best restaurants in America, a few years back as well as Food and Wine magazine. It has a popular bar and entertainment on the weekends.

No less spectacular is the magnificent Rancho Valencia Restaurant (3) ( (858-759-62116) within the world-famous Rancho Valencia Tennis Resort. The resort is picturesquely tucked into the hills of Rancho Santa Fe. When President Clinton was president, he dined here and so should you. The numbers in the text correspond to their location on the map.

At the corner of San Dieguito Road and Rancho Diegueno Road, which is the road you’ll take to get to the Rancho Valencia Resort is the Del Rayo Village Shops. It’s also home to Leucadia Pizzeria (7) (858-792-2222). This informal restaurant is a local favorite. While they serve over 30 pastas, 38 pizza toppings, their real claim to fame is that they do home delivery. Their name originated from the fact that their original location was in the suburb of Leucadia, but they have expanded to have over a dozen locations throughout San Diego.

Del Mar Walking Tour

WHERE TO SHOP

Although Rancho Santa Fe is a mere 3 square blocks in size, it’s a charming place to shop for fashionable attire. After all, Rancho Santa Fe is home to the rich and famous and guests staying at the recommended hotels come from around the world to vacation here. So, shopping is a must.

Borrego Springs

Borrego Springs is home to the largest desert state park in America. It’s an impressive 630,000-acre Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, which is nearly the same size at the state of Rhode Island. This spectacular desert park has majestic mountains, beautiful canyons, hiking trails, camping, wildflowers, and miles of scenic beauty. At night the sky is filled with millions of glittering stars. The magnificent sunrises and sunsets are equally spectacular. It’s also home to excellent hotels and home rentals for a memorable weekend getaway.

East County Map

Most of Borrego Spring’s 250,000 visitors come in the spring when the wildflowers are in full bloom during the months of March through May. So be sure to bring your camera or smartphone. To avoid the traffic do come during the week or stay in a hotel (see where to stay) for a few days longer. So you can take in all of the sights.

A must-see attraction is the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park Visitor’s Center (2) (760-767-4205). Also,  popular items to take home are the life-sized statues of prehistoric animals, which can be seen along many of the highways and by-ways in Borrego. Most were created by artist Ricardo Breceda.  you’ll see sculptures of wild horses, sabertooth tigers, and desert tortoises, which seem to be crawling through the brush. The artist, Ricardo Breceda, brings life to his sculptures by capturing these creatures in motion. They are so still, yet all you see is movement.

Brewery Tour of San Diego DIY

Breweries, San Diego, Beer
Brewery Tour of San Diego DIY is the Best Do-It-Yourself San Diego Micro-Brewery Tour because it features the best  San Diego Breweries.

Best Do-It-Yourself San Diego Micro-Brewery Tour features San Diego’s Best Micro-Breweries. The best Brewery Tour of San Diego DIY feature of this hand-picked list it that they are not only the best of the best, but they are easy-to-find micro-breweries. So if you are a visitor to San Diego with limited time, or you’re a newcomer and want to get on the fast track to get to know the city’s best micro-breweries, this tour will introduce you to the leaders and the sentimental favorites all in a few hours.

Mission Valley Map

These micro-breweries are the absolute cream of the crop. Their brands are the top award-winning breweries in all of San Diego County and winners of more blue ribbons than many countries in Europe can claim to have received. Ironically, they are within a 4-mile radius of Mission Valley’s Hotel Circle, (see map) not by chance but by design. Strategically, speaking their line of thinking is that the more out-of-towners to sample their beer the greater the likelihood that you’ll clammer to your favorite liquor store back home to carry their beer. It’s called forced distribution.

Please take a close look at each of the four maps, and make note of crossing of Highway 8 and the Interstate 5 Freeway are what ties all three of these maps together into being one map with each map being a piece of a bigger map. The numbers in the text correspond to their location on each map. As always, each brewery was personally reviewed (in this case several times) because we only recommend what we experienced and found to be good enough for our best friend. We enjoyed our brew hopping adventure and think you will too.

Halloween Collectible Decorations at Bay Park Map
Bay Park Map shows the easy proximity to the freeway, the bay and other suburbs

Micro-Brewery Tour of Bay Park

Ballast Point Home Brew Mart & Brewery is 40 yards east of the corner of Napa St. and Linda Vista Rd. (see map) at 5401 Linda Vista Rd. (619-295-2337). It’s open daily from 10 a.m.–10 p.m. except for Fri., Sat. and Sun. when it opens at 9 a.m. When you walk through the front door of Ballast Point House Brew Mart and Brewery you will be walking through hollowed doors as virtually every brewmaster at every successful micro-brewery took lessons to perfect the art of beermaking in the homebrew mart’s classroom. They still offer classes here.

What put San Diego on the map to one day become the micro-brewery capital of the world happened in these classroom meetings when friendships were forged between the young brewmasters to share their methods of creating better and better beer vs. competing with one another and keeping their successes secret from one another. As a result, micro-brewers exploded into a huge industry and San Diego’s breweries have more blue ribbons they received from more international brewery contests than all of the other countries in the world combined. So enjoy your brew.

As you might expect Ballast Point has several huge brewery/restaurant locations throughout the county, but unless you are a local finding them is difficult the first time you go there. Eventually, Ballast Point from these humble beginnings was bought for $1 billion four years ago by Constellation Brands. This Chicago-based beer company owns the American rights to top Mexican brands that include Modelo Beer.

Six blocks away to the northwest is the immensely popular Coronado Brewery (11) at 1205 Knoxville St. (619-275-6700). Two local beer enthusiasts, who are brothers, created their skills in Coronado, and thus they named their brewery and restaurant Coronado Brewery. Interestingly, they name their brews to reflect the sea such as Mermaid Red. You’ll enjoy their freshly-brewed beers created in their 22,000 sq. ft. working brewery and bottling plant. It has several nice comfortable tasting rooms and a large patio. The brewery is open weekdays 11 a.m.–9 p.m. and till 9:30  p.m. on Sat. and Sun. It’s also a dog-friendly spot. So bring your pouch.

Across the street is the world-famous City Lights Christmas store (11) at 1212 Knoxville St. (619-275-1006). While you’re having a brew your sweetheart can be buying hard to find Christmas ornaments housed in 40,000 sq. ft. of sheer Christmas Wonderment! This store is so popular that it’s become a major San Diego Attraction, especially during the holidays.

Micro-Brewery Tour of North Park

North Park (see map) has a much different vibe to it as this community is definitely a blue-collar community and it draws crowds from many downtown suburbs and thus it’s a huge melting pot of people. The best way to get there is to take the Texas Street Exit south from Highway 8 and proceed. through a couple of traffic lights till you reach University Avenue; then turn left and proceed east till you reach 30th Street. Instantaneously, you’ll find yourself surrounded by bars, micropubs, and eateries. Safety can be an issue here, so park as close to 30th street as possible and only come here during the day.

As you might expect it’s home to TONS of microbreweries and brewpubs including Mike Hess Brewing Company (14) at 3812 Grim Ave. (619-255-7136). It’s open noon till 9 p.m. except Fri. & Sat till 10 p.m.

Another microbrewery with multiple locations is The Belching Beaver Tasting Room (14) at 4223 30th St. (619-282-1062). This is the main thoroughfare in North Park. It’s open from 3 p.m.–10 p.m. Mon.–Thurs. and noon to midnight Fri. through Sun.

Micro-Brewery Tour of Liberty Station

Not to miss is the world-famous Stone Brewing World Bistro and Gardens (16) at Liberty Station. See Pt. Loma map below. It’s super simple to get to by car. Take the Rosecrans exit from Highway 8 and stay on Rosecrans Street until you see a sign that says Liberty Station. Then take a left into this attractive setting of historic buildings called Liberty Station.

Believe it or not, but Signage wasn’t allowed in the strip mall, but everyone knows where Stone Brewery is located and the streets are clearly marked. Plus, there is a TON of parking. If you read the Pt. Loma chapter you’ll discover that there is a lot to see and do at Liberty station. Plus, there’s a TON of great restaurants to discover. And Stone Brewery also has an impressive restaurant. You’ll really like this place.

I don’t want to give it all away, but they have a bubbling brook running through the restaurant and the outdoor grounds with its running brook and fire rings make this place a show stopper.

As if this isn’t enough, they also have three Bocci Ball Courts. If you like playing Bocci Ball or would like to learn, they have 3 nice courts and lots of friendly people to get you started. Don’t miss visiting Stone Brewery.

Yet, this isn’t the main location of Stone Brewery. It’s 40 miles away in the outskirts of Escondido (which means hidden in Spanish and their Brewery in Escondido is definitely hidden). So be happy they built this location. They open daily at 11:30 a.m.–9 p.m. and Fri. and Sat. till 10 p.m.  Nice extras are the Bocci Ball Courts, a stream running through the restaurant, and a huge outdoor beer garden.

Point Loma and Harbor Island Map

Micro-Brewery Tour of Ocean Beach

In nearby Ocean Beach are a host of microbrewers and brewpubs near the beach. How cool is that? A classic in the true sense of the word is Pizza Port (14) at 1956 Bacon St. When they got founded back in the 1970’s the owners didn’t have enough money to buy chairs and tables, so they bought a lot of picnic tables. Their beer-drinking, pizza-loving clientele, loved eating on their funky picnic tables inside. The rest as they say is history. Now, this kid-friendly local restaurant chain has a half a dozen locations countywide and regionally in San Clemente. Go figure?

Down the street on Voltaire Ave. (see map) is yet another location of Mike Hess Brewing (13) at 4893 Voltaire St. (619-795-1095). What’s great about microbreweries, in general, is the friendship and commodore that gets created over a glass of beer.

Ocean Beach Map

Then on Newport Ave. (see map) which is the main street of Ocean Beach are no less than 5 breweries. So once you park all you have to do is discover them on foot. Plus, at 5010 Newport Ave., which is the block closest to the ocean is the world-famous Hodad’s Burger Joint (619-224-4623). On most days there is a long line of people waiting to get in. They claim that they haven’t sold a Billion burgers yet, but don’t be surprised if they do. Since they have appeared on Diners, Dives, and Drive-ins and you are a hamburger aficionado, you gotta eat here. Your best bet is to dine hear midweek to avoid the long lines.

Last but not least is the award-winning Kaiserhof German Restaurant (2), you’ll pass by if you enter Ocean Beach on Sunset Cliffs Blvd. They have a nice beer garden and a small intimate pub. Their claim to fame is their awesome Germain food. So, seriously consider dining here. It’s at 2253 Sunset Cliffs Blvd. (619-224-0606).  They have a popular happy hour Tues.– Fri. from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. [See Kaiserhofrestaurant.com] for details. Enjoy!

This tour definitely dots all the I’s and crossed all of the T’s in providing an entertaining excursion of San Diego’s famous microbreweries in a fun do-it-yourself excursion and simultaneously discovering 4 unique suburbs in a few hours.

Locals frequent Clairemont and Kearny Mesa daily for business and pleasure. Kearny Mesa is home to the largest Asian Multi-National District in America. See the Convoy District Chapter on this site. Kearny Mesa is also home to the Montgomery Airfield. Plus, it’s home to many new and used car dealerships. Thus, easy access is major contributor to why Clairemont and Kearny Mesa are home to dozens of restaurants serving burgers to boast the name, Hamburger Heaven.

History of City Lights

City Lights opened 28 years ago in September 1991 as a small 1000 Sq. Ft operation intended only to be open 3 days a week. Brian Young, the owner, had been retired for 2 years from being Managing Director of a large retail group in London, England, but was in need of some interest and a small shop in a seasonal business sounded ideal. Motivated not by money, but rather just by the need to be occupied, the concept of City Lights was created.

In our early days, City Lights was mainly a year around Christmas Store with only two collectible lines, Department 56 and Annalee. As time progressed, and we became more well-known, our clientele grew, and with that, so did the product lines. We became a Showcase dealer for Department 56 after our first year, and a “Gold Key” dealer shortly after that. Needless to say, as we continued to grow, so did the man-hours needed to keep the business running, and the space to display everything. City Lights is now open 7 days a week, all year long, and has a sales floor of over 30,000 sqft and an additional 10,000 sqft for warehousing.

City Lights is a family run business with Laura, Brian’s wife, and Spencer, their son, all working to serve you better. Along with them, there is a fully knowledgeable and friendly staff to help you with any questions you may have and assist you in any way possible.

Borrego Springs is Enjoying a Land Boom

Borrego Springs is home to six golf courses one of which is rated one of the top three courses in America.

Borrego Springs is home to great real estate investments. One such investment is this 17-Acre Estate Lot, which is less than a minute from the prestigious de Anza Country Club and golf course.

A quarter million visitors will soon be visiting Borrego Springs to see the desert wildflowers in bloom. Many of these visitors will also be to looking for estate sized parcels of land to buy. This land rush for the last available parcels generated 48 land sales last year. That figure was well above the average of 12 parcels sold a year as smart buyers are becoming keenly aware that when the big parcels are gone they will be gone. The good news is that there are plenty of smaller parcels available, but there is limited availability for large state properties to join those already there.

The reasons for building your own spectacular desert castle or owning a seasonal or year around desert resort home are as numerous as the millions of stars that shine brightly in the sky each night. Since Borrego is not near a big city the night sky offers a spectacular view of stars and planets including the millions of stars in a milky way, Orian’s Belt, The North Star, the big dipper and shooting stars galore.

Of great appeal is the fact that Borrego Springs only has a population of 3,500 residents who are spread out over this massive 630,000-acre Anza-Borrego Desert State  Park. This humongous state park is so big that it’s almost the same size as the state of Rhode Island. So think Big and Beautiful with lots of wide open spaciousness. Add the fact that Borrego Springs is only 90 miles or less by car from the metropolis of San Diego, which is the seventh largest city in America, or you can get there even quicker to get there by air. All of which contributes to the reason why Borrego is both a great getaway as well as a wonderful place to buy an estate lot and build a castle. Now with less and less big estate parcels left property buyers are realizing that big estates are becoming a thing for only a few. So Borrego appeal is also enhanced by the limited amount of underground spring water available.

Thus, Borrego Springs will never grow into anything like it’s big neighbor to the north, Palm Springs with its many traffic lights and tens of thousands of residents.  Instead, due to a lack of natural springs water, it will always remain an exclusive getaway located in the center of the largest desert state park in the world.  But you better hurry, if you want to build your desert castle here, as there is a mini land rush going on in Borrego. Last year, 48 properties were sold, up from an average of 12 a year, and as the word gets out the current inventory will disappear making Borrego Springs even more exclusive than it already is. Plus, it’s only 90 minutes to the big metropolis of San Diego and only an hour more to Orange County, Los Angeles, and Riverside counties. So being so close to a big city more people are looking for a relaxing place to unwind.

Plus, the cost of new home construction is only ($133) a foot plus, with the accessibility of home building firms and lots of general contractors available from the greater San Diego area, finding a good contractor is not an issue. Thus, once you’ve found your estate sized parcel, the steps from buying your parcel to final completion of your Castle in the Desert are very straight forward because every home in Borrego Springs was built exactly the same way—one custom home is built at a time.

Top Properties Now Available

Just now available is a 17-Acre Estate Lot, which is one football field wide and seven football fields long. It’s construction ready with the utilities near the foot of your private street. It’s ideally located in the northern end of the Borrego Springs Valley near other estate homes. Plus, it’s less than a mile from the prestigious De Anza Country Club and the famous desert sculptures.

This estate property is minutes from Christmas Circle, which is the hub of Borrego’s daily activity. Here too, is a new public library and police station offering a striking upbeat, and modern, architectural flavor to this internationally acclaimed desert resort.

If you purchase this 17-acre estate property you will, no doubt, have the most talked about the home of the ages. The majesty views of the mountains loom near at sunset making it a beautiful place to live. Then when the sun goes down, the sky is filled with literally millions of glittering stars making the view a breathtaking experience.

Borrego’s Desert Beauty Makes it  Special

Diverse San Diego County is also home to the largest desert state park in Americ a. It’s the impressive 630,000-acre Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, which is nearly the same size at the state of Rhode Island. This spectacular desert park has majestic mountains, beautiful canyons, hiking trails, camping, wildflowers and miles of scenic beauty. At night the sky is filled with millions of glittering stars. The magnificent sunrises and sunsets are equally spectacular.

Most of Borrego Sprints’ 250,000. visitors come in the spring when the wildflowers are in full bloom during the months of March through May. So be sure to bring your camera or smartphone. To avoid the traffic do come during the week or stay in a hotel (see where to stay) for a few days longer. So you can take in all of the sights

A must-see attraction is the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park Visitor’s Center (2) (760-767-4205). Here you will be introduced to the natural beauty of the desert with over 1,000 specials of plants, 297 varieties of birds and 116 different species of butterflies. The center also has fascinating displays and special multi-projector slide shows about the desert.

The visitor’s center is open daily 9 a.m.–5 p.m., Oct. 1–May 31. Then during the hot season, June 1–Sept. 30, the Visitor’s Center is open 9 a.m.–5 p.m. on weekends and holidays. It’s closed on weekends.

Also popular for campers and RV enthusiasts is to stay overnight in the state park. Depending on the season and accommodations requested, overnight fees at the Anza-Borrego State Park  (7) (760-767-4205) or go online.

Shoppers will also want to wanter through The Mall on Palm Canyon Dr. where you’ll find lots of nick nacks and a wonderful souvenir. Here too is Kendall’s Cafe serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Also,  popular items to take home are the life-sized statues of pre-historic animals, which can be seen along many of the highways and by-ways in Borrego.

Embarcadero tours

Sightseeing  Downtown always include a waterfront walking tour.

My land excursion sightseeing tour of Downtown is an important piece of the San Diego pie. It is broken up into 6 easy to digest slices. My downtown map explains it all in a glance. Therefore, with a color-coded map showing the suburbs within the downtown area will make understanding downtown and its one-way streets a snap! This essential Tour San Diego is comprised of little Italy, The Embarcadero, East Village,  and The Gaslamp District. Both The Uptown District and Hillcrest are separate. Discovering Downtown with this easy-to-use map with its one-way streets makes navigating the city a snap.

If you’re staying in downtown and want to get a lay of the land, then expect to visit Mr. A’s. We’ll enjoy a meal or at least a cocktail at Mr. A’s. From this rooftop restaurant, you’ll have your breath taken away by the sweeping view of the city.  At twilight, the view is against the backdrop of planes landing at the San Diego International Airport and the sparkling San Diego Harbor. But a visit to this world-renowned French Restaurant is just the top of the iceberg. There is plenty more to discovery in finding out what makes downtown and uptown tick.

D.  EMBARCADERO TOUR — click on hot link for tour

Sightsee San Diego means embracing the Embarcadero as it is a “must-see” attraction! One big attraction is the San Diego Maritime Museum. It’s comprised of no less than seven must-see floating vessels and an incredible museum. Here you can board every vessel including the oldest floating Merchant Ship afloat. You can even board a Russian submarine and tons of other historic relics. Two blocks away is the USS Midway CVA-41 aircraft carrier. It’s the most visited attraction in San Diego. Yes, its popularity even surpasses the world-famous San Diego Zoo.

Tour the USS Midway

Sightsee San Diego  must include a tour of the USS Midway. It will make you proud to be an American. We are a Navy town.

Next door is the equally famous Fish Market Restaurant.  They offer two restaurants in one. You can dine upstairs in their upscale gourmet restaurant. Or dine on the main floor restaurants for the freshest seafood and enjoy great bay views. They even have their own fishing fleet.

If it’s steaks you want, then Ruth’s Chris is just down the block. It offers an ocean view as well. Other visitor attractions include Seaport Village and the Headquarters. These are two touristy shopping and dining destinations visitors never tire of seeing.

Further along the Embarcadero are gigantic hotels with awesome marinas and restaurants galore.  Hard to overlook is the gigantic San Diego Convention Center, which is home to 100’s of conventions a year including the world famous Comicon. Yes, my Tour San Diego has it all.

G. MICROBREWERY TOUR — click on this link

Each November San Diego Celebrates the fact that it’s the microbrewery capital of the World with hundreds of events. What makes San Diego the Beer Capital of the World is a great story I’ll stare with you when we tour the breweries. San Diego’s breweries have won more Gold, Blue and Silver Ribbons at more brewery events than any other city in the world. You are in luck, I know the really important breweries,  you must go to. So if you are looking for a brewery tour, I can create an awesome one for you.

In fact, in my current 50th Annual Anniversary Edition, I feature a tour of 12 outstanding breweries. They encompass a 4-mile radius of Mission Valley.  Even better it includes the top three microbreweries in the world. They are Stone Brewing World Bistro and Gardens, Ballast Point Brewery, and Coronado Brewery. These are the giants in the industry. In the mix is Pizza Port. It’s a local favorite founded in the 1980s, which is also appreciated for its hot pizzas. Also worth visiting is The Belching Beaver, Mike Hess Brewing Company and lots more. We could top off this sightseeing excursion with a meal at the World Famous Phil’s BBQ or any cuisine of your choice.

Barry will also take the time to show you what streets and byways residents use to navigate the city at different times of the day. So this is anything but a commercial bus tour. Barry wants you to be able to navigate the city like a local. Plus, his self-guided city tours will take you on side trips and through historical suburbs and explain why they are significant in getting to know the city of San Diego.

He’ll point out great places to dine and places to shop. These tips are what makes his San Diego couples only city tours so incredibly valuable. It’s just like your best friend was introducing you to the city. Thus, each city tour of San Diego is filled with TONS of insider information that few locals will ever know. Barry has spent 50 years learning the city beyond just growing up in San Diego  So knowing how to navigate the city and appreciate all that it has to offer is why Barry’s Tour San Diego is  #1.

POINT LOMA TOUR – Click on link to take the tour

  1. Sightsee San Diego means visiting Cabrillo Monument, Point Loma, Shelter Island, Liberty Station, Harbor Island, and the Embarcadero. No visit to San Diego would be complete without visiting Cabrillo Monument with its panoramic views of the city and beyond. Wandering thru the suburbs which comprise Point Loma will make you fall in love with these suburbs. You could conclude your tour with a meal at a romantic bayfront restaurant, which could be the beginning of a vacation to remember. Not be missed are the incredible views from Cabrillo Monument, which is 100% essential to see. The view will give you a sweeping perspective of how San Diego is laid out. Be sure to have a visit to the original Cabrillo Lighthouse. Perhaps, view the tidepools at the water’s edge. Then hike down to the current Cabrillo Lighthouse at the foot of Point Loma before heading on to see the rest of historic Point Loma. You’ll also tour all of the suburbs that comprise Point Loma as well as the many must-see sightseeing tours and attractions including Shelter Island, Liberty Station, Ocean Beach, and the Ocean Beach Pier and the Sports Arena.

C. DOWNTOWN CITY TOUR –click the hot link for tour

Embarcadero tours

Sightseeing Tours of Downtown always include a waterfront walking tour.

San Diego Tours means a tour of Downtown, which is an important piece of the San Diego pie.

Yes, my Tour San Diego has it all.

tours of the Famous Hotel Del

Since 1888 the world famous Hotel del Coronado has been a showplace.

E. CORONADO TOUR — click hot link for the tour

San Diego tours must include a tour of Coronado. It’s such a delight!  You can get there by car across the 1.4-mile long bridge. Both ways are spectacular! The bridge offers a sweeping view of the city, the harbor, the South Bay, Mexico and beyond.

Must see attractions include the historic Hotel Del Coronado. Plus, it’s fun to wander through The Shops at the Hotel Del Coronado. Time permitting we can take a stroll down Orange Avenue for an ice cream cone or to dine there is fun. Plus, sightseeing the magnificent homes of the rich and famous is a treat.

Not to be missed is the impressive Coronado Ferry Landing Marketplace. It’s home to outstanding restaurants with awesome downtown San Diego views and delightful shops. If we came by ferry we can disembark back across San Diego Bay to downtown San Diego. Sightseeing the city on a ferryboat is such a great adventure!

Tours Ocean Beach

Ocean Beach is Home to Great Sunsets.

F. Mission Bay

Sightsee San Diego means seeing the coastal zone with a spectacular view of Cabrillo Monument. From there we’ll wander down the hill to Ocean Beach, San Diego’s classic beach town. Or we’ll discover romantic Shelter Island with it’s swaying palm trees and breathtaking harbor views. Then heading north you’ll visit Mission Beach and see one of only two roller coasters in California. Your next destination will be the popular Pacific Beach a popular place to live.  Finally, we’ll head up to the top of Mt. Soledad for a breathtaking 360 degrees View of the City. We’ll also wander down to the world famous La Jolla Shores.  From there we’ll visit the chic Village of La Jolla, which is a “must see” coastal adventure. There is a lot to see on a Tour San Diego Day Tour.

Having eaten in 100’s of restaurants, I’d recommend a cocktail at the world famous Marine Room Restaurant. At high tide, the waves actually crash on the windows of this dining classic. Over my 50-year career as a restaurant reviewer, I have reviewed 10,000 restaurants. So I will point out the goods ones.

s
San Diego is also the microbrewery capital of the world. So let’s take some tasting tours!

H.  ROMANTIC WINE TASTING TOUR — click on hot link

Since I know San Diego like the back of my hand, I am sure that I can create a romantic Tour San Diego sightseeing tour to your liking. Therefore, these tours will be filled with awesome breathtaking city views, gourmet dining and of course dancing. There is even a place to dine where more people get engaged in this restaurant patio than anywhere else in town. My favorite is a dinner and dance cruise aboard a yacht that tours romantic San Diego Bay. Plus, San Diego is home to the largest Asian Restaurant Row in America. Believe it or not but over 100 Asian Restaurants can be found side by side along a 1.5 mill thoroughfare in Kearny Mesa. I’ve eaten in most of them and can create a dining experience you won’t forget.https://sandiegan.com/fun-things-around-san-diego-bay-year-round-activity/

La Jolla is the jewel of the Pacific. It’s where virtually everyone wants to live or at least visit. It offers romantic breathtaking shoreline views with stunning multi-million dollar homes offering coastline and hillside views. Being a world-renowned seaside getaway, it’s home or has been home to the rich and famous including Beatles rock star George Harrison and actor Gregory Peck.

Most appealing is its world famous La Jolla Cove, which is an invitation to swim in its crystal clear water. No less appealing is to surf, swim, walk and bask on its seashore.

Plus, the village of La Jolla is as appealing as Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. Thus, it’s a must-visit magnet for shopping, dining and strolling along its village streets. I’ll introduce you to the magnificence of La Jolla from the hilltops to the seashore. Plus, I’ll point out world-famous restaurants to dine in and how to find your way back to them.

The mission of Renaissance Village Academy is to provide gifted, profoundly gifted, and highly motivated students with the experiences and knowledge they will need to be successfully navigating the complexities of the world from an international perspective.
They will be guided to develop compassion and tolerance through a study of other languages and cultures. RVA students will be taught in a way that recognizes their intellectual gifts while acknowledging that they are still maturing. The enthusiasm their teachers have for learning will provide them with role models for becoming life-long learners themselves.
RVA serves the needs of gifted, profoundly gifted, and highly-motivated students beginning at Kinder, all the way through 8th grade, open to qualified children of any race, color, nationality, or religion.

Admissions

The admissions process is designed to help both families and the school learn as much as possible about applicants in order to make a strong, informed decision on behalf of each child.
The admissions process should also give families ample time and opportunity to learn about RVA’s curriculum and programs, to complete application requirements and to consider admissions decisions.

It’s located at the tip of Point Loma at 1800 Cabrillo Memorial Dr. (619-557-5450). The best way to get there is take Rosecrans Street to Canon Street and turn right. Then when you get to Catalina Boulevard turn left onto Catalina Boulevard. Stay on it as it will take you to the national monument. The fee includes access to the 160-acre national park including the Cabrillo Monument, the old lighthouse, hiking trails and the tide pools. Believe it or not, but Cabrillo Monument is one of the most visited national monuments in the United States. Once you see the view, you’ll understand why it’s such a visited landmark!

Another spectacular viewpoint is from a restaurant, which is high atop of the Fifth Avenue Financial Center at 2550 Fifth Ave. in San Diego’s Banker’s Hill District. Both sweeping views of the harbor and planes gliding by your window on their final approach to San Diego’s International Airport make this a must-visit destination. So do come for cocktails or a meal at Mr. A’s Restaurant (2) (619-239-1377). The view is what you must see to seriously appreciate all that San Diego Bay has to offer from this uptown city view restaurant (See Restaurants).

However, the best way to truly appreciate San Diego Bay is to see it from the water. Be it by renting a sailboat, a motorboat or taking a harbor cruise. CHULA VISTA MARINAS

The big plus to the Chula Vista marinas in the South Bay is that they are the least expensive marinas per foot on San Diego Bay. The main conjecture for this is that they are also the farthest from the entrance to the ocean. However,  this is a real plus, if your plans are to sail the vastness of San Diego Bay, which is immense. Plus, if you are only a seasonal sailor, low rates, and a big bay to sail  on is an unbeatable combination.

THE PORT OF SAN DIEGO

San Diego’s #1 attraction is San Diego Bay. It’s the centerpiece of our city and a model for other harbor cities to follow in how to smoothly blend together leisure activities with a robust maritime industry alongside a huge naval fleet. This love affair with our natural natural harbor began on September 28, 1542, when Portuguese Explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo sailed into San Diego Bay and proclaimed it for the King of Spain.

Today, nearly 500 years later, we have a stunning, world-class, port, thanks to the forward-thinking San Diego Unified Port District [portofsandiego.org]. They oversee the protection of the 34 miles of tidelands and waterways. Thus, it’s through their vision that we have economic vitality through a balanced approach to the bay’s maritime industry, tourism, water and land recreation, environmental stewardship and public safety. The stunning look and feel of San Diego’s natural harbor were created by the dredging of the bay to enable deep draft military and cruise ships to navigate the bay with ease. This dredging resulted in the creation of both Shelter Island and Harbor Island. Today, both of these palm tree-lined islands are home to upscale resort hotels, fabulous bay view restaurants, stunning yacht clubs, boat brokerage firms, multiple marinas and grassy areas for picnics, weddings, festivals, concerts, art shows and much, much more.

Equally impressive is the family-friendly enhancement of the downtown Embarcadero by the San Diego Port District. It’s now a fun to explore showpiece with two beautiful cruise ship terminals, stunning waterfront restaurants, multiple “must-see attractions” plus underground parking structures and community parks. So residents and visitor alike can enjoy downtown San Diego’s vibrant waterfront district vs. other cities that have build towering high rise blocking citizens from enjoying their waterfront.

Additionally, now in progress is the redevelopment of the Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal Redevelopment Project. It’s a $24 million public works project that will result in a more modern, clean and efficient commercial cargo terminal. All of these incredible accomplishments by the Port of San Diego were made possible by our port being a financially self-sustaining public benefit corporation. The Port District’s revenues are generated through lease payments and not through taxes. So it’s revenue stream is invested back into the community to maintain and enhance our dynamic waterfront for all to use.

As a result, the variety and extent of the leisure activities on San Diego Bay have become so prevalent that a chapter devoted just to San Diego Bay was needed as a quick reference to get the most out of the San Diego Bay experience. Even though many activities are touted in other suburb chapters in this book and online a central resource was needed.

YACHT CLUBS

San Diego natural harbor and easy access to the ocean has made it a paradise for boating enthusiasts, which is why being a member of one of the yacht clubs is the best way to enjoy all aspects of boating. You’ll meet wonderful people just like you who share your love of boating be it on the high seas or over a nice meal at your club. The pluses far outweigh any other considerations. It’s not even a prerequisite to know how to operate a boat to become a yacht club member. On the contrary, you don’t even have to own a boat to join a club. Yet, being around boaters and taking classes in navigation usually results in you owning a boat or becoming a first mate on someone else’s boat. So join the fun and join a club. Amazing as it may seem, yacht clubs are always on the lookout for new members to join in the fun. In fact, you’ll be welcomed with open arms. Since no two clubs are alike, plan to visit several clubs to find the right one for you. Plus, if you are looking for a spectacular venue for a wedding, business meeting or a group event, most of these clubs are well equipped with great food and beverage services riveling the best hotel and restaurant venues in town for non-member usage. Here is an overview of the long-established yacht clubs offering the most services. These clubs are listed by region.
