Gaslamp Museum at the William Heath Davis House, the Oldest House in the Gaslamp

The Gaslamp Museum at the William Heath Davis House, built in 1850, is the oldest house in San Diego’s Historic Gaslamp Quarter. Because of the shortage of lumber in the area at the time, 8 to 10 pre-cut houses were purchased from a manufacturer in Portland, Maine and shipped to San Diego. After a long journey around Cape Horn, the ship arrived in what was then referred to as “New Town.” The houses were erected there, but the only one remaining in its entirety is our historic house museum. You will notice that the style of the structure is of a salt-box style house prevalent in New England at that time.

Each room represents a different period in the house’s history, from its use as a pre-Civil War military officer’s barracks to that of a make-shift hospital, to the home of the owners who saw to it that their house would eventually become the museum it is today.

Purchased by the City of San Diego in 1970s and moved to its current location at the corner of Island and Fourth Avenues in 1984, the restoration began to transform this old residence into a museum. Electricity was installed (yes, there had never been electricity in the home until the early 1980s), and the layers of wall paper were peeled back to reveal its earlier décor. Then-Museum Curator, Mary Jarolmon worked tirelessly to restore the house to its current state as a museum for all to appreciate and enjoy.

Be sure to browse through the Gift Shop area, where there are a number of displays explaining the various periods in downtown San Diego’s early history. Among the displays, you will see three large cases holding a model replica of the original “New Town”. There are small placards next to some of the model buildings that describe what buildings now sit in those locations. Keep your eyes open for additional displays since they are dispersed throughout the gift shop.

They offer many different types of tours for our guests from Children’s Tours to Gaslamp Quarter Walking Tours to tours of the William Heath Davis House Museum. The tours serve as an educational tool that allows the Foundation to fulfill its mission of preserving the cultural, historical and architectural heritage of the Gaslamp Quarter

They also offer Custom Tours for groups of 10 or more that include Architectural Tours and Red Light District Tours. Recently, several different paranormal research teams conducted investigation of spirit activity in the Davis House, and their findings were similar and quite stunning. Based on their investigations, we have developed a Ghost Tour of the Davis House. All our tours either take place at or begin at the Gaslamp Museum at the William Heath Davis House, 410 Island Avenue between 4th and 5th Avenues in the Gaslamp.

Join us as we celebrate the 120 year anniversary of the 1892 Cabrillo Festival. During the land boom of the 1880s, San Diego’s population swelled to over 30,000; yet by 1890 the population had dropped to less than half because of the economic turndown experienced nationally and locally. This recession caused bank failures, lost jobs, and numerous bankruptcies. Even Wyatt Earp left town unable make a living as a saloon owner or to sell his acquired properties.

The First Cabrillo Festival of 1892 was created to counter the economic depression of the 1890’s. In the hope of promoting San Diego by attracting visitors to its shores, the founding fathers decided to produce a festival celebrating the 350th anniversary of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo’s discovery of San Diego Bay in 1542. Festivities included a staged reenactment of Cabrillo landing on the California shore, races, full dress ball, banquets, literary exercises and a grand parade in the heart of downtown.

Travel back in time by reliving this grand festival and parade through vintage photos, historical newspaper archives, and artifacts. Admission to The Mary Joralmon Gallery and the exhibit is free. To view the historical William Heath Davis House, admission is $5.00 or $4.00 for seniors, students and military.

Cafe La Maze Steakhouse Offers San Diego’s Best Prime Rib, Delicious Steak & Seafood

Cafe La Maze Steakhouse

At the famed Café La Maze you’ll be walking into one of Hollywood’s most famous dining and dancing spots south of Los Angeles. As the story goes, back in the 1940’s Café La Maze was where movie stars from Hollywood stopped before or after a day at the Caliente Race Track.

As the story is told, movie stars would travel south to the Caliente Racetrack to bet on the ponies south of the border in Mexico, but wanted a halfway house to dine before or after a day at the race track on this side of the border. Thus, Café La Maze was born.

As a tribute to these golden aged stars of the screen today at Cafe La Maze you’ll find huge, golden-framed pictures now adorn the walls with photos of frequent diners such as Clark Gable, Errol Flynn, Bing Crosby, Joan Crawford, Jean Harlow, Carole Lombard and Veronica Lake.

So as you dine in this classy setting, these stars of yesteryear gaze down at you as you cuddle into the rich red, fluffy tuck and rolled, circular leather booths.

Also eye catching is the dated 1940’s wallpaper, which tingles with red and metallic regal designs that are so emblematic of the 40’s era. Even after dining here you’ll be remembering their inviting, rich red leather booths, which provides a relaxed, intimate feeling as you sit back and enjoy your meal. It’s nothing less than high class.

Prime Rib lovers will rave about this place. And a great appetizer before any main course is their bites sized servings of chunks of prime rib served with ranch and blue cheese dressing. So if you don’t have their famous Prime Rib, definitely have the Prime Rib Bites for appetizers with horseradish and au jus. It’s Fabulous!

Another must have is their Cesar salad with it’s fresh crunchy Romaine lettuce with savory croutons you can get your teeth in. This delicious salad was created south of the border in Tijuana and has gained international fame as well. Be sure to order it too! The onion soup is a savory alternative.

The house specialty is prime rib cooked to perfection in either 9 oz. petite cut, 12 oz. regular cut, 16 oz. La Maze cut or their grand or porter cut 24 oz. ($18.95–$36.95). Also featured are New York strip steak, filet mignon, rib eye and top sirloin along with BBQ beef ribs.

Not to be overlooked are their surf and turf and seafood specials. A real show-stopper are the two lobster tails served with drawn butter. It’s delicious to the last bite.

A great conclusion to any meal is one of their memorable desserts such as chocolate mouse cake, which goes well with a karaoke coffee from their full bar, as you sit back and enjoy the live entertainment of lyrics of the 40?s through to the present beginning at 7 p.m. nightly.

This is a great place for a couples evening out as well as a great place to celebrate with the entire family. Plus, their live music brings the high-flying atmosphere from the 1940’s when movie stars dined here and brought back to life every evening.

Santa Ysabel Store & Backcountry Visitor Center offers Heirloom goods & foods with 19th Century General Store Ambiance

The historic Santa Ysabel General Store, an iconic landmark, is now open for business with an innovative dual purpose. Dating from 1884, the store is now being restored, bringing a unique emporium brimming with heirloom and artisanal foodstuffs, back-to-nature gifts, wares for home and garden, and books and guides for the naturalist or cultural tourist. The store, ideally located at a well-traveled crossroads where state Highways 78 and 79 meet, is a popular destination as it doubles as a new Backcountry Visitor Center focused on public trails, birds and wildlife, recreational opportunities, and cultural heritage sites. Open Friday-Sunday from 11am-5pm.

The Santa Ysabel General Store is an updated version of the traditional central source of food and essential items for farmers, families, and travelers. Instead of huge burlap sacks of flour, corn and grain heaped on the floor, shoppers will find attractive, pantry-sized packages from heritage and organic food producers. Instead of agricultural tools and supplies, there are heirloom seeds and bulbs, do-it-yourself cheese or craft beer making kits, and specialty honey, pickled vegetables and preserves put up in micro batches by food artisans.

The new Visitor Center within the store offers maps, guidebooks, practical gear, binoculars and scopes, and information for hikers, mountain bikers, bird watchers, and other nature enthusiasts. It is staffed by knowledgeable members of San Diego County land and nature conservancies. The headwaters for the San Diego and San Dieguito Rivers originate near Santa Ysabel, so the focus on these regional watersheds is a natural fit for the Visitor Center.

Adobe Chapel is the Real Ramona’s Marriage Place

The Adobe Chapel was originally built in 1850 as a home, and was converted to a church by Don José Aguirre in 1858. After having been bulldozed for street realignment in the 1930s, the WPA reconstructed the adobe chapel in 1937. Much of the interior artifacts from the original chapel have been retained, including the tabernacle, the altar with its beautiful marbleized finish, some woodwork including pews and doors, and José Aguirre’s tombstone is laid in the floor.

Open Saturday & Sunday, 12-4pm & by appointment, closed closed Christmas day and Thanksgiving day

Warner-Carrillo Adobe Ranch House Wasthe Butterfield Stage Stop from 1858 to the Civil War

Warner-Carrillo Adobe Ranch House

Built in 1857 by Vincenta Carrillo, a prominent early Californio woman rancher, the adobe known as the Ranch House at Warner’s served as the Butterfield Stage Stop from 1858 until the beginning of the Civil War in 1861. As California’s first regular overland transcontinental stage connection with St. Louis, this pioneering stage route ran along the Missouri Trail. The trail was the most southerly and only all-weather route to California. Built directly beside the emigrant trail, it figured prominently in the settlers’ diaries as their first glimpse of the promised land, the first well watered valley to be encountered after crossing the great southwestern deserts. The historic setting has changed very little from the time of the great western migration and presents a rare opportunity to experience the past.

“Warner’s Ranch is a comfortable house situated in the valley, in the midst of a beautiful meadow, and with its shingled roof looked more like civilization than anything I had seen for many days. There were hundreds of cattle grazing on the plain, and everything looked as comfortable as every natural advantage could secure.” – Waterman L. Ormsby, correspondent for the New York Herald, 1858

The adobe maintains a high degree of integrity including a great deal of its historic fabric including the original fireplace mantle, much woodwork and vigas (ceiling beams).

The ranch house plays a leading role in the history of the American West. It represents Mexican and American culture contact during the Mexican Republic; the Frontier period of the westward migration; and the Gold Rush and the cattle ranching industry from 19th century Californio to 20th century to today.

Its importance as the southern emigrant overland trail and Butterfield Stage Station cannot be overstated and it is for this significance that it was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1962.

It still sits in the midst of a huge expanse of open space, a setting virtually unchanged from the mid 19th century. Located on San Felipe Road (State Highway S2) a half mile east of Highway 79 in the Warner Springs area and owned by the Vista Irrigation District (VID), the surrounding land is still used for cattle ranching.

“The Spring Round Up – Scene of Great Activity on the Warner Ranch. The Warner Ranch Company has just closed its spring round up. It has lasted four or five days and about thirty vaqueros engaged. It was one of those occasions becoming quite rare in California owing to the cutting up of cattle ranges into farms and town sites.” – San Diego Union, 1898

In 2000 after the site was first listed by SOHO as the “most important unprotected historical site in San Diego County,” a $75,000 matching grant through the San Diego Foundation was offered by an anonymous donor who cited SOHO’s listing as the catalyst for the donation, which the Vista Irrigation District was able to match. The VID then embarked on a campaign to raise an additional approximately $300,000 to fully restore the site. In 2010 the VID pursued and won a California Cultural and Historical Endowment (CCHE) grant, which was also a grant that the VID matched. This enabled the restoration to be done and today this hugely important piece of American history has been saved.

The CCHE grant came with the requirement that the site be open to the public and operated by an organization capable of handling a museum operation. After a decade of endangered status and working closely with VID, historians and grant writers, it was natural that the VID would ask SOHO to operate the site.

We are honored and thrilled to be able to do so and to tell the story of the emigrant trail, trading post, the overland stage, the all-important water story and the prominent ranching history that this site with its multilayered history has to tell. That’s a lot of story for one site but we will endeavor to do it well.

Staffing the site will be logistically a little harder, but we feel confident that people will jump at the chance to work at such a nationally significant historic site such as this. If you are interested in being a volunteer docent please contact us. Initially, we will be open Saturdays and Sundays, with a grand opening to be announced soon.

“During the entire Butterfield-Southern Route operation, October 1858 to April 1861, Carrillo’s Buena Vista, being the olden Warner Ranch House acquired from Portilla and repaired by the Carrillo’s, served as the home-owned Butterfield Station on Warner’s Ranch.” – William L. Wright,The Warner’s Ranch Butterfield Station Puzzle, Los Angeles: Teh Westerners’ Brand Book 9, Los Angeles Corral, 1961

Marston House Museum & Gardens: The Finest Example of the Arts & Crafts Movement

Marston House Museum & Gardens

One of California’s finest examples of the Arts and Crafts movement, the Marston House was constructed in 1905 for George W. Marston and his wife, Anna Gunn Marston. George Marston is noted for many things but most prominently as a civic leader whose interest and work in historic preservation, conservation and history is well known.

The property was designed and built by the internationally renowned architects William Sterling Hebbard and Irving Gill. Surrounded by five acres of rolling lawns, manicured formal gardens, and rustic canyon gardens, this 8,500 square-foot home became a house museum in 1987 after the Marston family gifted it to the City of San Diego for the enjoyment of the public.

Spend some time exploring the grounds, formal gardens and canyon pathways in the shade of towering pine, eucalyptus and oak trees. Learn about one of San Diego’s most prominent families and the master architects and landscape designers who worked with the family to create one of the region’s most important estates.

Marston House Garden Tour is available during summer hours ONLY (June 17, 2013 through Labor Day) on Saturdays & Sundays, 11am · 1pm · 3pm · 45 minutes
for $10. The garden tour takes you on a walk through the 5-acre estate beginning with the first plantings and landscape plan in 1905 to the 1928 introduction of a formal garden. You will also learn about the grand restoration plans for one of the few remaining arts and crafts canyon landscapes in southern California. Off Season exclusive tours are offered by appointment and group tours only, and are available by special request.

Old Town San Diego’s Haunted Whaley House

Whaley House Old Town San Diego

A classic example of mid-nineteenth century Greek Revival architecture, the Whaley House was formally dedicated as a historic house museum on May 25, 1960 and has been open to the public ever since; it is one of southern California’s most popular visitor destinations. Over 100,000 people visit the Whaley House annually, with guests traveling from across the globe to experience this world-renowned museum. It is owned by the County of San Diego and since September of 2000 Save Our Heritage Organisation (SOHO) has managed and operated the property. SOHO, a non-profit advocacy organization, has lead the community as a powerful catalyst for historic preservation by raising awareness and appreciation of our region’s architectural and cultural heritage since 1969.

The building was started with the construction of a granary that later became the courtroom. The two-story house and store addition was designed by Thomas Whaley himself and constructed in 1857. It was the first two-story brick edifice in San Diego, and was built from bricks made in Thomas Whaley’s own brickyard. Whaley boasted, “My new house, when completed, will be the handsomest, most comfortable and convenient place in town or within 150 miles of here.”

The house is now in the process of a major restoration. Their interpretive period is from 1856 when construction began on the house to 1885 when Thomas Whaley moved his family to a new home in New Town, San Diego. Their primary focus is on 1868 to 1871, when the Whaley House was not only the Whaley family residence, but also San Diego’s first commercial theater, the county courthouse, and the Whaley and Crosthwaite General Store, all of which have been restored to the museum.

SOHO San Diego Preserves Historic Sites

Save Our Heritage Organization SOHO San Diego

Since 1969, the Save Our Heritage Organisation has lead San Diego County as a powerful voice for historic preservation. They believe that the historic architecture and sites entrusted to this generation should be passed down to the next, so that they too will know the unique character of San Diego County.

Through education, advocacy and stewardship SOHO’s mission is to preserve, promote & support preservation of the architectural, cultural & historical links & landmarks that contribute to the community identity, depth & character of the San Diego Region region.

SOHO operates and oversees several historic properties, their primary offices reside at the Whaley House Museum complex in Old Town.

* The Whaley House Museum
* The Adobe Chapel
* The George and Anna Marston House Museum
* SOHO Offices in the Derby-Pendleton House
* Warner-Carillo Ranch House in Warner Springs
* Santa Ysabel General Store

SOHO Museum Shops are located in the 1872 Verna House in Old Town and the 1905 Marston House carriage house in Balboa Park, the Warner-Carillo Ranch House in Warner Springs and the Santa Ysabel General Store and Back Country Visitor Center. These shops are the ultimate source for the preservation, restoration, decoration and design enthusiast. We have books and unique period style gifts from early California through Mid-Century Modernism. Use the resources the SOHO experts use and take satisfaction in knowing that your purchase helps to sustain San Diego’s architectural and cultural legacy.

The Santa Ysabel Store is an updated version of the traditional central source of food and essential items for farmers, families, and travelers. Instead of huge burlap sacks of flour, corn and grain heaped on the floor, shoppers will find attractive, pantry-sized packages from heritage and organic food producers. Instead of agricultural tools and supplies, there will be heirloom seeds and bulbs, do-it-yourself cheese or craft beer making kits, and specialty honey, pickled vegetables and preserves put up in micro batches by food artisans.

YMCA of San Diego County Offers Activities & Events for People of All Ages

The YMCA of San Diego County was established in 1928 and touches the lives of nearly one out of every ten people in their community. This criticall organization is dedicated to improving the quality of human life and to helping all people realize their fullest potential through development of the spirit, mind and body.

They focus their work in three key areas, because nurturing the potential of kids, helping people live healthier and supporting their neighbors are fundamental to strengthening communities.

With the Y’s help, kids in neighborhoods across San Diego County are more interested in and making smarter life choices. At the Y, kids learn their ABCs, learn to share, learn about sportsmanship, build leadership skills and most importantly, learn how to be themselves. That makes for confident kids today and contributing and engaged adults tomorrow.

Because the Y is for everyone, they bring together children, adults and families of all abilities like no other organization can. As a result, hundreds of thousands in San Diego County are receiving the support, guidance and resources needed to achieve greater  and well-being for their spirit, mind and body.

Thanks to the generosity of volunteers and public and private donors who give to the Y, their community is stronger. Every day, they work side-by-side with their neighbors to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.

They offer many child day care and you day camp packages, where every day is packed with activity! Day campers are grouped by age. The youngest campers have extra time to play, explore, and build responsibility.

Fashion Valley History

The mall, developed by Ernest W. Hahn, opened in 1969, in part on the former site of the baseball stadium called Westgate Park. Aimed to be the leading shopping center in the San Diego region, it boasted four anchors, The Broadway, JCPenney, J.W. Robinson’s and Buffum’s. For several years it competed with the neighboring Mission Valley Center.

The mall has undergone several expansions and changes since its opening. The first in August 1981 added Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus. This established Fashion Valley as the fashion leader in the valley. Following this redevelopment, in 1991, Buffum’s closed, and their location was reopened in 1992 by upscale specialty San Francisco department store I. Magnin. However, the upscale company eventually closed all stores in the mid-90s, and this particular location in Mission Valley was replaced by Saks Fifth Avenue in 1995. Robinson’s became a Robinsons-May in 1993, while The Broadway was purchased by Macy’s in 1996
