St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center (SMSC) presents Doggos, a collection of collagraph prints by artists of Sophie’s Gallery at their new location in El Cajon (140 Main Street, El Cajon, CA 92020). The show will run from February 7 – 29, 2020.

The artists of Sophie’s Gallery celebrate the special bond between humans and canines in a whimsical collection of collagraph dog prints. Collagraph printing, a low-tech medium that is non-toxic was invented in the 1950’s. Sophie’s artists built printing–plates using recycled paper glued to a rigid support that were inked and passed through a printing press twice. Collagraphic printing is a process that is a combination of intaglio and relief printing techniques. The first pass through the press makes the background and the second pass through the press creates the foreground of the finished prints.

St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center serves more than 400 adults with developmental disabilities through nationally recognized, innovative programs. Its mission is to educate and empower individuals with developmental disabilities to realize their full potential. Developmental disabilities include autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and other cognitive disorders for which there are no cures.

Sophie’s Gallery, the off-campus art program of St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center, has been instrumental in the Downtown El Cajon Arts District for over 20 years. We are excited to announce the soft opening of our new space on 140 E. Main Street, which is now open to the public. Sophie’s Gallery features artwork of many talented individuals with developmental disabilities. Inside the gallery is a collection of artworks including jewelry, paintings, fused glass, mosaics, textiles, cards, and etc. The gallery, which is also a gift shop, allows SMSC students to showcase their work, earn a paycheck from sales of their artwork, while also raising funds for the art programs.
